Where Is Chevy Made

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Many St. Charles drivers ask us, “where is Chevy made?” Our Chevy trucks are made with American parts, but it’s a longer story than what Batavia drivers may think. Read on below to learn more as we answer questions like, “Where are Chevy trucks made,” and “Is Chevy American?” with this quick overview from Bob Jass Chevrolet.

Is Chevy American?

GMC owns Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and Pontiac and is headquartered right here in the U.S. in Michigan. GMC also operates facilities in 35 countries that include Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.

The Chevy Colorado and Chevy Silverado are built in North and Central America in different locations. The Chevy Colorado is only built in Wentzville, Missouri while the Chevy Silverado is built in Flint, Michigan, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Springfield, Ohio, and Silao, Mexico.

Aurora drivers will also be happy to know that Chevy meets the criteria for “Made in the USA,” with at least 50% of each Chevy truck being produced in the U.S. and Canada. 62% of the Silverado’s parts and 71% of the Chevy Colorado’s parts are made in the U.S. and Canada!

Who Makes Chevy Trucks?

The facilities we mentioned above are assembly plants, but Elburn drivers also wonder who makes Chevy parts. 38 U.S. companies and GMC-owned facilities create Chevy parts. As mentioned above, most Chevy parts are produced in the U.S. in Michigan facilities, and many of those facilities are in the Flint, Michigan area. Any foreign-made Chevy parts appear mostly in electronics and in some interior spaces.

Those Chevy parts come from a few other companies around the globe:

  • Two South Korean & French Companies
  • Three Canadian & Brazilian Companies
  • Four Japanese Companies
  • Five Mexican Companies

There are also individual partners that exist in Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Hungary, Egypt, Thailand, and India. You could essentially say that Chevrolet trucks are made in America, but Chevrolet trucks are a global product, too.

Who Makes Chevys in China?

Yes, Chevys exist in the Chinese market, but these Chevys exist only for the Chinese market. Chinese automaker SAIC motor and GM both have a 50-50 stake in Chinese factories that produce Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac vehicles — along with other GM brands.

But in the countries above, why doesn’t China show up? Because the 27.5% import tax on Chinese-made vehicles makes it not profitable enough to manufacture Chevy trucks in China and to then import them to the U.S. At this time, Chinese-made Chevy trucks are only sold in China.
